Equality Parade.

Following the VOTE to exclude Gay and Lesbian couples from Equality in Jersey. The Island's only political Party REFORM JERSEY has organised a Rally from The Royal Square to Liberation Square this coming Saturday at 12pm.

A FACEBOOK GROUP set up to publicise this event has attracted in excess of 700 (and climbing) people saying they will be attending. This will send out a strong message to our government saying that it got it wrong...................Again and the so-called "politically apathetic" Jersey Residents are not as apathetic as the State Media would have us believe.

VFC interviewed two members of Reform Jersey, Deputies Montfort Tadier, and Nick Le Cornu, to explain how the Rally came about, who will be attending, and what the Rally will achieve (if anything).

If you are Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/disabled/female and are sick and tired of the government regarding you as a second-class citizen please show your support to this Rally. Equally if you are a member of the public who feels the government discriminates against you and does not represent you then please show this Rally your support.

  1. I cannot accept Reform Jersey's one sided view of this.
Ian Le Marquand was right to slow this down. A vociferous minority (for that is what they are) needs to remember that many thousands do not share their views wholeheartedly and it isn't an attack on equality or their 'rights.' The backlash in the UK was intense when Cameron pushed it through and the same will happen here if care isn't taken. It is right that a measured and temperate discussion takes place and the views of the entire island need to be evaluated.

    1. Team Voice, the above comment is identical to one posted by Mike Pitman on a Facebook group.

Why didn't you post this under your actual name Mike?

    2. Have to laugh at this. Why hasn't the person who just made this 2nd comment not posted under his name!!!

    3. No answer then Mike? What is it you're scared of?

  2. Totally support the issue of gay marriage BUT it should not be rushed through, it needs to be investigated and done properly. Ian Le Marquand is correct. This could have implications for matters such as housing laws (perhaps husband and wife are mentioned or similar issues) so it makes complete sense to consider all the implications so that all the relevant legislation can be amended at the same time. I would like to support Reform Jersey but at the moment anyone who raises any objection to their aims, no matter how well intentioned, is labelled the enemy, so I don't feel able to give RJ my full support.

  3. The States agreed in principle to a child abuse investigation took three years, the state agreed in principle the freedom information law in 2007 still not here.

The examples show that the details can follow once agreement has been reached, they could not even get to an a worthwhile agreement. No, this is more about religious beliefs than common sense, or what the " majority " want.

  4. I'm sorry, but what exactly needs to be "reviewed" about equality?

Ian Le Marquand was not correct. He opposed civil partnerships and now opposes equal marriage. He just doesn't want equality.

Amazing how some people still live in the stone age.

  5. When we gave women the vote there were implications, when we abolished slavery, there were implications, but equality is a fundamental human right and we should not hide behind "implications" The world will not stop turning when people are free to marry who they love. davemoodyjersey@aol.com

  6. The amount of people attending this rally is now over 800 according to the Facebook page. That is significant!

    1. I would be attending to if I wasn't stuck 5000 Miles away, to show support for the principal of equality and vent my anger at this (mostly) pathetic apology of a government that currently turns a deaf ear to the people. There are but a few courageous and fair representatives of the people that deserve all our support in the defense of civil rights, equality and justice.

My only other point would be if 800 people truly can and do get off their butts to support this just and noble principal, then I hope they can feel similarly driven and empowered to support the fight against the corrupt and illegal cover up of pedophiles in Jersey.

Wake up your island needs you now!

For the record not gay, but proud to stand along side all my gay friends in granting them equality.

  7. Not having equality of marriage or legal partnership rights is actually more complicated than providing equity. Without equity, there are numerous legal complications with inheritance, next of kin, housing and really everything which is encoded in marital rights for opposite sex couples. Legalizing gay marriage has not led to bigger legal problems elsewhere, but fewer, in fact. From a purely practical sense, and as a matter of humanity, discrimination creates far more issues than it solves. Good luck moving equality forward.

  8. This video interview is being condemned already by so many gay people tonight I would argue it's you 3 who are out of touch with Jersey.

  9. Dear VFC

I don't write on your blog often but I am grateful that you offer an opportunity to comment annonymously and take an editorial decsion yourself to filter out the nonsense and obviousl rubbish. I note with dismay that the JEP now require verifyable ID. Sam Mezec, who on a recent tweet thinks this is a good idea as it will stop 'trolls', sadly is very naive and he clearly doesn't realise that the intention of this is to track people like me who cannot disclose their identitity because of posibble retribution and consequences and therefore rely on annonymity to comment on what are often very serious issues, The trolls will always take the time to set up multiple secret accounts because that is their modus operandi and to be honest the JEP are not interested in them it is the 'enemy within' they want to target. JEP mainstearm media working for the establishment yet again.
